Founded in 1837 by Richard Humphreys, a Philadelphia Quaker, Cheyney University is Americas oldest historically Black institution of higher education. Today, Cheyney University leverages that rich history of providing access to higher education for all students and by producing visionary leaders and responsible citizens. Cheyney graduates are successful, talented individuals, and some of the most well-known include 60 Minutes journalist, Ed Bradley and Dominique Curry of the St. Louis Rams. Cheyney University is in the business of developing human potential and talent and does so through an intellectually challenging environment and personal attention to every student a hallmark of the Cheyney experience. The Universitys 275-acre campus of rolling hillsides in southeastern Pennsylvania is located only 25 miles from Philadelphia. The heart of the campus is its historic quadrangle with buildings dating back to the early 1900s. The campus is complimented by five residence halls including a new 400-bed suite-style residence hall. The newly established Center of Excellence in Communications Media, Fine Art and Entertainment Arts boasts of two theatres for the performing arts, Dudley Theatre and the recently renovated Marian Anderson Music Center; as well as a state-of-the art graphic design lab. Further, the University is complimented by a library; an Aquaponics Greenhouse, dining hall, snack bar, fitness center, student union, and multiple athletic facilities. Cheyney University also has a location in downtown Philadelphia, which primarily houses the Universitys graduate degree programs and serves as a commuter campus for Philadelphia residents. Approximately 1,200 students choose from more than 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and participate in more than 40 clubs, societies and student organizations. Further, the University has implemented the University College Model for freshmen and sophomore students, enhancing student engagement and establishing a critical link between residence life and academics. The model carefully monitors students academic progress, social skills and social maturity via appropriately arranged advising, mentoring, counseling and career services. The University is an NCAA Division II institution with 12 intercollegiate sports teams. The campus includes two training facilities, OShields Stevenson Stadium (football and track) and Cope Hall (volley ball, basketball and swimming). Our student-athletes will be viewed as students first, and only then as athletes. The department will focus on providing graduates who are successful, well rounded and prepared to make positive contributions to society. Academics achievements in the classroom, together with the development of character, individual and team skills, the will to win, and a sense of fair play and sportsmanship in athletic competition determines distinction in intercollegiate athletics programs. Cheyney University is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
